Sri Sri Jogananda Brahmachary Maharaj, formerly known as Sri Mahendra Nath Mukherjee, was a descendent of Daroga Family who lived in Chhaygaon, Faridpur, Bangladesh. His Guru Sanyashi Gosai Thakur (original identity is unknown) gave the name “Sri Sri Jogananda Brahmachary” to his disciple Mahendra Nath. It is worthy to mention that Sanyashi Gosai and Sri Shyamacharan Lahiri Mahasay both were disciples of Pahari Baba (Mahavatar Babaji). Sri Sri Ram Thakur was uncle of Mahendra Nath.
Among many disciples of Sri Sri Jogananda Brahmachary, three were the most important –Parampurush Bigyanananda Thakur of Bhowanipore, Sri Sri Sadananda Bramhachary (Sri Durga Charan Maitra) of Nabadwip and Sri Sri Ma Karunamayee of Ballygunge. The name “Sri Srimat Swami Bigyanananda Maharaj” was given by Sri Sri Jogananda Brahmachary.
